October is the month for painted leaves. Their rich glow now flashes round the world. As fruits and leaves and the day itself acquire a bright tint just before they fall, so the year near its setting. October is its sunset sky; November the later twilight.

Many of Knoxville's other Autumn features are seen in Gary's book. Two that you will recognize:

  1. The Market House was a hub of commerce for decades in downtown Knoxville. The building, along with the farmer's trucks of the 1920s, have been replaced by a pedestrian mall dominated by an open pavilion.
  2. Built in 1897 and still standing, the bandstand at Chilhowee Park was a popular gathering spot during the National Conservation Exposition in 1913. Chilhowee Park is the home of the annual Tennessee Valley A & I Fair.

Mules and wagons were used in the construction of the University of Tennessee's football stadium in 1921. Neyland Stadium, the second largest college football stadium in the nation, now seats more than 97,000.
